De Lima kay Remulla: ‘I will gain my freedom on merits, not on humanitarian grounds’

MANILA, Philippines – Iginiit ni dating Senador Leila de Lima nitong Biyernes, Abril 21, na ilalaban niya ang kanyang kalayaan sa pamamagitan ng pagpapatunay nitong “fabricated” ang mga kasong inihain laban sa kanya.

Ito ay tugon niya sa sinabi ni Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla na kokontrahin niya ang application for bail ni de Lima kung ang gagamitin niyang dahilan ay ang merits sa drug cases na inihain laban sa kanya.

“I will gain my freedom on the merits, because the DOJ has no case against me from the very beginning,” ani De Lima.

Bagama’t nagpapasalamat siya sa pag-aalala ni Remulla lalo na noong siya ay ma-hostage sa selda nito sa Philippine National Police custodial center, sinabi ng dating senador na “cannot thank him as the head of the agency that is primarily responsible for the fabrication of the charges” laban sa kanya.

Ani De Lima, ang mga reklamong inihain laban sa kanya sa panahon ng administrasyon ni dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ay “maintained, to date.”

Matatandaan na sinabi ni Remulla sa isang panayam na susuportahan ng DOJ ang bail ni De Lima kung ito ay batay sa humanitarian grounds at hindi sa merits o demerits ng mga kaso.

“Bail as a matter of humanitarian ground as a humanitarian gesture is what we support here in the DOJ, not on the merits or demerits of the cases because six years is a long time to be detained while undergoing trial,” ani Remulla.

“I think it is very clear we want to give her a fair shake no matter what and maybe a respite from detention, but her lawyers think otherwise. And that they should take advantage of this opportunity to say she’s innocent and that’s why she should be granted bail. Malayo ho yan. Two big things that are far apart from each other,” paliwanag pa niya. RNT/JGC
