Kalahati ng glacier sa buong mundo malulusaw sa 2100

MANILA, Philippines – Mabubura sa buong mundo ang kalahati ng glacier nito sa pagtatapos ng siglo dahil sa climate change, ayon sa isang pag-aaral.

Ang nasabing pag-aaral na inilathala sa  journal Science ay sumuri sa 215,000 glacier ng buong mundo.

Saad pa sa pag-aaral na kapag nalimitahan ang global warming, maililigtas naman nito ang ilang mga glacier sa mundo sa pamamagitan ng pagbabawas sa greenhouse gas emissions, ayon sa may akda ng pag-aaral.

Para malinawan ang mga policy maker sa iba’t ibang panig ng mundo, sinuri ng mga siyentipiko ang apat na sitwasyon sa glacier, kung saan kabilang dito ang pagkakaroon ng 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), 2.0C, 3.0C at 4.0C na klima.

“Every degree increase produces more melt and loss,” ayon kay Regine Hock of the University of Oslo and University of Alaska Fairbanks, isang co-author ng pag-aaral.

“But that also means if you reduce the temperature increase, you can also reduce that mass loss,” dagdag naman ni Hock. “So in that sense, there is also a little bit of hope.”

Kahit na umabot sa global temperature rise na 1.5C above pre-industrial levels — ang itinakdang pinaka-ambitious goal ng Paris Agreement — naestima ng mga mananaliksik na malulusaw pa rin ang nasa 49 porsyento ng glacier sa buong mundo sa taong 2100.

“Regions with relatively little ice like the European Alps, the Caucasus, the Andes, or the western US, they lose almost all the ice by the end of the century almost no matter what the emission scenario is,” babala ni Hock. “So those glaciers, they’re more or less doomed.” RNT
