MANILA, Philippines- Nakapagtala ang Pilipinas ng kabuuang  879,429 deaths noong nakaraang taon.

Sa kasalukuyan, ito ang itinuturing na pinamakataas sa bansa, “in a single year.”

Ang report,  ipinalabas ng  Philippine Statistics Authority noong August 13, 2022,  nagpapakita na  2,700 deaths  sa isang araw, ayon sa Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM).

Ang POPCOM sa report nito kung saan quoted si  Juan Antonio Perez III, MD, POPCOM’s executive director at Undersecretary for Population and Development,  ay  nagpahayag na ang health system ng Pilipinas  ay “severely challenged” noong nakaraang taon kaya  “its recovery requires more resources in the immediate future.”

Ang bilang ng mga namatay sa taong  2021, pangawalang taon ng  COVID-19 pandemic,  ay mataas ng  265,493 kumpara sa  613,936  na napaulat noong 2020 nang magsimula ang pandemiya.

Base sa POPCOM report ang  September 2021  ay mayroong “most number of deaths” na may kabuuang  119,758.

“Almost 4,000 Filipinos died every day that month (3,992), and almost three every minute (2.7),”  ayon sa POPCOM.

“However, not all of these deaths were due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” dagdag ng POPCOM.

Sinabi naman ni Perez na  159,770 ng naiulat na namatay ay “unrelated to COVID-19.”

Ang dahilan ng nasabing pagkamatay ng naturang bilang ay dahil sa mga sakit na gaya ng  ischemic heart disease o heart attacks –   29.7 percent; cerebrovascular disease o strokes – 15.3 percent;  diabetes mellitus –  21 percent; at hypertensive disease o hypertension – 31.5 percent.

Ang pagkamatay naman  dahil sa malnutrisyon ay tumaas naman ng  47 percent.

“On the other hand, those triggered by neoplasms, or various forms of cancers, were down 10.3 percent,” ayon kay Perez.

“Many of the diseases that caused increased mortality are preventable at the primary level of care, but the health system was not flexible enough to treat and care for both COVID and non-COVID patients,” dagdag na pahayag nito sabay sabing “On the other hand, the decrease in cancer-related deaths was most likely due to the lack of tertiary level of diagnostic and therapeutic care, as ‘COVID’ cases crowded out actual and undiagnosed cancer patients.” Kris Jose
